What is Individual DBT Therapy?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is based on the concept of dialectics which emphasizes that two opposing ideas can simultaneously be true. Clients often come to treatment wanting to grow and heal. From a DBT perspective, growth and healing involve balancing the dialectics of accepting the facts of our life with the desire and need for change.

Comprehensive DBT

Comprehensive DBT involves individual therapy with a DBT therapist and weekly attendance in a skills training group. A core assumption in DBT treatment is that while we may not have caused all the problems we experience, we still need to work towards solving them.

How Does Comprehensive DBT Therapy Work?

Comprehensive DBT incorporates four modes of treatment that include:

  • Individual Therapy

  • Skills Training Groups

  • Phone Coaching

  • Team Consultation

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, clients explore their behavioral patterns using a technique called behavioral analysis. This behavioral analysis allows a client and their therapist to see what behaviors are helpful and healthy versus which ones are problematic. Using a nonjudgmental approach, clients explore their responses and actions which leads to greater self-awareness, self-understanding, and the ability to make different choices in the future.

Skills Training Groups

The DBT skills training group is a 24-week program where clients learn important life skills. These skills are related to Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

Phone Coaching

During DBT, the therapist provides inter-session phone coaching to clients to help them generalize newly learned skills to their life in between sessions and groups. Through this, the therapist will offer support and help the client apply the skills they learn in their day-to-day life.

Team Consultation

Lastly, comprehensive DBT involves team consultation. In team consultation, DBT therapists meet with each other without clients, to support each other's practice and discuss challenging cases. This helps ensure that the therapist is delivering DBT in an effective and evidence-based way.
