EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Lets You Work Through Trauma On Your Own Terms

Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an effective and structured approach for the treatment of trauma, traumatic memories, and PTSD. EMDR treatment is based on the Adaptive Information Processing model - which reflects the theory that we as humans are adaptive beings and are innately equipped to heal ourselves.

EMDR helps you access your inherent ability to heal using BLS - Bilateral Stimulation, a process that engages both hemispheres of the brain, while safely recalling aspects of traumatic memories. The process has been shown to reduce mental and physical distress related to the original event.

EMDR therapy can help process both long-standing and more recent symptoms of trauma and PTSD, whether from experiences long ago in childhood, or unexpected life events or crises in adulthood. If someone has experienced an accident or illness, grief, emotional abuse, bullying, an unexpected break-up, or even an event or crisis related to geo-political circumstances, EMDR can help re-establish emotional safety.

Trauma Creates Dysregulation Both In Mood And Behavior

When trauma impacts someone, they often experience mood dysregulation. This can include hypervigilance, anxiety, panic attacks, racing or obsessive thoughts, depression, dissociation, and chronic fatigue—among other symptoms—all of which EMDR can address.

People can also experience behavioral dysregulation as a result of trauma, including sleep disturbances like insomnia or nightmares, addiction issues, disordered eating, and even attention issues. EMDR is often the first method of treatment that’s recommended to help alleviate these trauma symptoms as the process encourages clients to make healthier behavioral choices.

Traumatic events overload our nervous systems. In these moments, all learning stops as our bodies move into fight, flight, or freeze. Once the event is over, our bodies may struggle with intense associations and flashbacks like images, emotions, and physical sensations. This may also include negative thoughts or beliefs about ourselves or others. A therapist can help someone identify how their experiences impact them and provide the structure of EMDR counseling to help regulate and neutralize the distress associated with the traumatic event.

How EMDR Therapy Works

If someone has been through a traumatic experience and seeks targeted therapy to recover and heal, EMDR is the perfect choice to start right away. If they are in talk therapy and find that they keep coming back to experiences where they seem to get stuck, EMDR can be added to their therapy plan to help create some movement.

EMDR is based on the theory of adaptive information processing and the idea that we all have an innate ability to heal ourselves. One of the ways we tap into that ability is to keep our minds in a place of learning. EMDR therapy helps to keep us in that place by stimulating both hemispheres of our brain through eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation (taps, sounds, etc...).

Bilateral stimulation like eye movement therapy allows us to experience desensitization while focusing on an upsetting memory or sensation. That memory would then no longer create the same reaction in our minds and bodies. Think of it as providing more information for our brain—kind of like a software update!

Often, within a few EMDR sessions, clients will start to feel a reduction in their symptoms such as a lowering of anxiety, relief from painful images or associations, and a greater sense of their ability to be present and clearheaded. Generally speaking, as they progress through EMDR, they’ll have a broader perspective and an overall lessening of distress related to the incident or event.
